Product Review: Best Beauty Bargain Buys – 30.08.2013

The last few weeks I have been doing a post on Best Bargain Beauty Buys, and as mentioned, while I do splurge on high end products, I also purchase a lot of inexpensive products, that I use on a daily basis that are inexpensive, simply because they are efficient and fantastic products that I enjoy using – and as it appears that I am not the only one with habits like that, and by request, I’ll continue making the Best Bargain Beauty Buys a regular feature on my blog, so here are this week’s picks;

*Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Wash – RRP: $9.99 (354ml) – Available from Priceline, pharmacies and supermarkets

While I don’t have particularly dry or sensitive skin, my skin is a lot drier during winter and that’s when I enjoy using the Aveeno Daily Moisturising Body Wash which is soap free and hence extremely gentle on the skin. In spite of being soap free, it creates a nice lather and thoroughly but gently cleanses the skin. I also used this body wash I was pregnant, as being so gentle, it helped soothe the itch skin on especially my tummy. I love that it has such a faint but neutral scent, which also makes it suitable for the whole family.

*Garnier BB Eye Roll-On – RRP: $13.95 (7ml) – Available from Available from Priceline, pharmacies and supermarkets.

Like most others I have taken a liking to BB creams, so I was quite excited when I heard that Garnier had launched a BB Eye Roll-On. This BB Eye Roll-On is basically an eye cream and concealer in one as it helps moisturise the skin and long term it works on reducing dark circles and fine lines, all while the tinted formula immediately correct and covers dark circles.

Thanks to the little rollerball, it is so easy to us, also gently massaging the eye area at the same time to help reduce puffiness. While I do find that I need to blend the concealer with my fingers, I am loving this all-in-one formula, as it really does help quickly disguise the bags I have under my eyes, and even out the skin tone.

The colour light matches my skin tone well

The BB Eye Roll-On blended

Pantene Pro-V Night Miracle Essence – RRP: 8.95 (90ml) - Available from Priceline, pharmacies and supermarkets

When I’ve neglected giving my hair a deep treatment, I love this over nigh treatment from Pantene. Just a few pumps of this serum into my hair is all that’s required. The serum has a lovely fruity scent , and it absorbs quickly and completely so it doesn’t leave stains or residue on my pillow. And in the morning I can either style my hair, or wash it, but regardless my hair left feeling soft and deeply moisturised.  How easy is that!!

Dove Summer Glow Body Lotion – RRP: $7.36 (200ml) - Available from Priceline, pharmacies and supermarkets

Spring is just a few days away, so at this time of the year I am paler than ever – and being a little run down having newborn, and getting up in the middle of the night for night feeds, I am looking even paler! And that’s when a good self tanner is handy to give you that extra glow. I love the Summer Glow from Dove, as it is a normal body lotion with just a touch of self-tanner, so you can build it up by using it more frequently if you like, or do as me, and just use it once or twice each week.

*Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture – RRP: $13.12 (118ml) - Available from Priceline, pharmacies, and supermarkets

Being at the age where I need to use anti-ageing cream, I always use a serum, morning and night. However, having combination skin, always prone to breakouts, also means that a rich serum feels like more than sufficient for my skin, yet I am aware that the experts say to always use a moisturiser on top of the serum to ’lock in’ the moisture and nutrients of the serum – and that’s when I love using the Oil-Free Moisture from Neutrogena. The moisturiser is fragrance free and it is very gentle, and it absorbs into the skin quickly. It is also very lightweight and oil-free, yet gives my skin moisture, but without leaving my skin feel greasy, or like it is suffocating. It comes in a bottle with a pump that is so easy to use, and as the bottle is so huge, 2-3 times the size of a normal moisturiser, this is an absolute bargain buy!

Product Review: Eleven Australia 3 Minute Repair Rinse Out Treatment

While I was pregnant everyone told me to enjoy that my hair seemed to thrive with me being pregnant, and that as soon as I’d given birth and my hormone levels would change again, my hair would take a turn for the worse, I would start to loose hair and it would get dry and dull. My little boy is now 9 weeks old, and while I have started to drop a few hairs, it is still not so bad that I worry. But my hair is a little dry, and suddenly having less time to pamper myself, I was excited when I was asked to trial the *Eleven Australia 3 Minute Repair Rinse Out Treatment, so here are my thoughts;

What They Say:
"A protein & moisture blend to strengthen & nourish dry, damaged hair. Directions: Massage into clean, damp hair. Leave for 3 minutes and rinse out".

RRP: $24.95 (200ml) – Available from Eleven Australia Online

What I Say:

I have recently reviewed the Eleven Give Me Clean Hair Dry ShampooMake Me Shine Spray Gloss and Miracle Treatment and the and I am still enjoying using these products, I was excited to be 3 Minute Repair Rinse Out Treatment as well – and especially the fact that it takes just three minutes. Just what a busy new mum needs!!
After washing my hair I apply the Rinse Out Treatment, and in spite of being so thick and creamy, it instantly absorbs into my hair (maybe a sign that my hair is very dry and seriously need a haircut!!). Leaving it in for just three minutes, gives me just enough time to use a body scrub in the shower, before I need to rinse out the treatment. Perfect! And the treatment rinses out quickly and easily, and without leaving the hair feeling greasy.

Combing it afterwards is very quick and easy, and I seem to have a lot less knots than I usually do. With a newborn, I mostly leave my hair to dry naturally, - and when it is finally dry several hours later, it is left so soft, shiny and healthy looking and the frizz really has reduced. And while the ends are still in need a serious trim, they do feel more nourished and are looking healthier too. And that is after leaving the treatment in for just three minutes, the results feels like the treatment has been left in my hair for much longer.

The Eleven Australia 3 Minute Repair Rinse Out Treatment contains among others shea butter and an anti-static ingredient, and while I can feel the nourishing and moisturising effect of the shea butter, my hair is not normally static, I have no way of saying if this ingredient is actually working.

The Rinse Out Treatment comes in a white tub with a screw lid and turquoise writing – a simply yet very modern and stylish packaging in line with the rest of Eleven Australia’s products. While the tub is easy to use, I do find it a little clumsy in the shower – first of all, as the shelf in my shower is always packed full of products, I can never find anywhere to put the lid, and secondly, as I dig my hands into the tub to get the treatment, I cannot avoid also getting water into the tub, and hence diluting the treatment. I would much prefer it if came in a tube as it would just be so much easier to use.

I’ve been using the Rinse Out Treatment weekly for several weeks, and in spite of it containing silicones and parabens I have not noticed that my hair is being weighed down – on the contrary, my hair is clearly relishing this weekly treatment – and again, had it not been so effective in just 3 minutes, I would certainly not have been using it that frequently.

The Rinse Out Treatment has a lovely sweet fruity scent, and while it is sweet, it quite subtle and far from over the top – and once rinsed out and the hair has dried, this scent more or less completely disappears.

At just $24.95 for a 200ml tube this is such great value for a salon quality product, and as it is so thick and concentrated, there is enough for months’ worth of weekly treatments – in spite of my very long and thick hair, I still have well over half a tub left!

What I Like:
  • So effective in just 3 minutes
  • Easy to rinse out, and makes my hair so easy to comb, and looking so healthy afterwards.
  • Has a lovely fruity scent
  • A great price for a salon quality product
  • The simple, yet modern packaging

What I don’t Like:
  • That it comes in a tub, I would find it so much easier to use if it was in a tube
  • That it contains parabens and silicones, as I always prefer products free of these ingredients where possible.

Overall, I am loving using this Rinse Out Treatment, and the fact that I can give my hair such an intensive treatment in such a short time, so I would not hesitate buying this again. Another great product from Eleven Australia!
*This product was kindly provided for consideration, and it has been reviewed in accordance with my Disclosure Policy.

Have you ever tried any of the products from Eleven Australia? Do you use hair treatments? Which one would you recommend?

Product Review: David Jones Delux Sampler Tote – Winter 2013

As many others I can’t resist at good beauty gift with purchase, and so I got drawn in to getting the current beauty sampler tote from David Jones.

But thing is, I really didn’t need anything, so I was wondering around in the beauty department, looking at what I could get that that I needed... And so I got a nail polish remover, which I was actually basically out of - fantastic, and at just $4.95!

So what did this Deluxe Sampler Tote include…

David Jones Beauty Natural Regeneration Day Cream (30ml) and Deeply Purify Facial Cleanser (30ml)

I have never tried any of the David Jones products, I have no idea what to expect, but I am looking forward to trying these.

SKII Facial Treatment Essence (30ml)

I have heard a lot of good things about this treatment essence, but I have never tried it. I have heard some say that it has made their skin break out, so I am a little concerned that will also be the case with my combination skin prone to breakouts, but this 30ml sample will at least give me a good chance to try it, and see what it is like on my skin without spending up big to buy a full sized product.

The bag also contained a voucher giving you a free SKII Facial Treatment Mask with your first consultation and purchase.

Molton Brown Toko Yuzu Bath & Shower Gel (30ml)

Another brand that I’ve never tried before, although I’ve heard so much about it, so can’t wait to try it. The shower gel is only small, but at least I can use it once or twice and get a good idea of what it is like.

There was also a voucher giving you 20% off Molton Brown products when you spend $80 or more.

Circa Home Scented Soy Candle in Vanilla Bean & All Spice (mini size)

I love scented candles – with two dogs living inside the house, I frequently burn scented candles so that our house wont smell too much of dog. And this Circa candle not only looks so nice, but it smells absolutely divine. The candle was one of the reasons why I selected this particular bag.

OPI Nail lacquer in 37 (3.75ml mini size)

I love OPI polishes; they are 3-free, easy to apply, last well, and have a nice colour range, so I’m loving the inclusion of this mini size. In the bottle it looks dark brown or black, but once on the nail it is actually a very dark eggplant/purple colour – I love it!

Billie Goat Soap Lip Balm (Full size, 15ml)

Yet another brand that is new to me, yet I was aware of. I knew Billie Goat made soaps, but never knew that they made lipbalms too. I love that this one contains no chemical nasties including no parabens, SLS, colour, fragrance etc, yet it still has the most delicious scent of peach.

Roger & Gallet Bois D’Orange Perfumed Soap (25g)

I have seen this brand around before, but again, one I’ve not tried, mainly because I don’t really use soap bars – but in saying that, it smells fantastic so for now it can sit and look pretty in my powder room making it smell nice at the same time, before possibly making into my underwear drawer.

Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Day Lotion (7g)

I love Burt’s Bees, in particularly the lipbalms and the citrus cuticle balm. This day cream smells fantastic, so I look forward to trying it, although I could worry that being intensely hydrating it will be a little too rich for my skin, but time will tell.

Dermalogica Precleanse (30ml)

Now this is another product that made me select this bag. I have seen so many positive reviews on this cleanser, so I’ve been so keen on trying it. And again, the generous 30ml sample will give me a good chance to see what it’s like on my skin before making a full-sized purchase.

BioElixia Body Shaper body Lotion (20ml)

There was so much hype when Elixia launched their Body Shaper lotion, but sadly it isn’t cheap, but this 20ml sample will again be a good chance to try it, although it is probably too small to expect to see any results.

Everything came in a black plastic tote, which to be honest I'm not really sure what to do with as its not really my style.

Inside the tote was a see-through plastic cosmetic back holding all the samples, and while I have lots of better quality cosmetic and toilet bags, I do like this see-through one and can see myself using it to store samples so I can easily find what I am looking for.

On the whole I think that this bag is extremely good value for just $19.95 – and in my eyes better value than any of the monthly beauty boxes that I’ve seen – also because you can actually see in advance what you are getting.

What do you think? Did you go to David Jones and take advantage of this offer too? Which products are you most excited about trying?

Product Review: Violet Box – August Review

Finally, the August Violet Box has landed on my door step. Violet Box was only launched in June, so this is only the third box to hit the market, and I have been so impressed with the last two boxes, that I’ve been looking so forward to receiving it this month. If you’ve missed my reviews, you can see the June box here, and the July box here. And here are my thoughts on the August edition of the *The Violet Box;

What They Say:
Violet Box brands promises to every month include 4-6 premium beauty and lifestyle samples from well-known and trusted Australian beauty brands as well as exciting new International brands, one in particular is a revolutionary product currently trending in New York and has been featured in Vogue and on the Today Show!

RRP: You can subscribe to Violet Box for:
1 month – $22.95
3 months - $66.00
6 months - $130
12 months - $250

What I Say:
Some of the monthly beauty subscription boxes always seem to have a new theme, but like the previous two boxes, the August Violet Box does seem to be to a particular theme.

The Violet Box comes in a stylish matte black box, which is closed with a magnetised flip lid and a purple ribbon, and it has the purple Violet Box logo in the corner of the box. And inside, the samples were wrapped in violet tissue paper. The actual box is of a sturdy design, and the fact that it closes completely with the magnet, as well as it has a violet ribbon to tie it with, and as it is black and stylish looking, makes it makes it easy to re-use it to store small things such as jewellery or maybe lipsticks!!

So what was in the August Violet Box…

Jelly Pong Pong 2-in-1 Shadow/Liner - Full-size (RRP $19.00)

This is a crayon that doubles as an eyeliner for thick precise lines as well as perfectly-blended eye shadow. It is made from Italian formulated waxes and pigments that allow you to build up the colour, smudge or create bold lines.

I got the colour bronze, which is a lovely colour, and as per claims, tests on my hand proves that it is easy to use for both lines and smudge out as an Eyeshadow – quickly and easily, just what a new mum needs, so I can’t wait to play with this one, and see how it performs. I’ve never heard of this UK brand before so don’t really know what to expect, but I am excited to see this full sized product and in a colour that I will actually use, so big bonus points from me!

Jelly Pong Pong Lip Blush – Full Size (RRP $22.00)

This is another product from the UK brand. A lip stain in style with the Clinique Chubby Sticks. It is made with beeswax and ceresin was, for a sheer smooth application and it claims to be a moisturising lip stain that gives just the right amount of juicy colour while hydrating like a balm.

I got a nice red bright red colour, which in the tube looks really bright, and as you can see in the picture, it is very pigmented and once on the lips it still gives a good coverage in spite of claiming to be sheer. But it can be blotted with a tissue for a more sheer look, or built up for a more intense look.

Again time will tell how this performs during the day, and over lunch, but regardless I’ll love wearing this as we head into summer. And again I am very excited to see another full sized product in the box, and again something that I will really use, so more bonus points from me!

Dr. Bragi Age Management Moisturiser – 5ml Sample (RRP: $179.00/60ml)

This is an anti-ageing moisturiser with hyaluronic acid and marine extracts which are to help reduce the signs of ageing by fighting the effects of environmental stress. Just what I need!!! However, at $179 for a full-sized tube of this, I am sadly not likely to get this in the near future, but I will enjoy trying this sample and at least get a feel for what such an expensive moisturiser will feel like on my skin. But with a sample only large enough for just a few days use, I doubt that I will see any results.

ghd Style Heat Protection Spray – Full Size (RRP: $24.00/120ml)

I already have this heat protection spray and I’m loving it, so I am very happy to be receiving a full sized product of this. This spray helps put a protective barrier on the hair protecting it damage when heat styling. And unlike many other such products, it doesn’t make your hair feel stiff or weighs it down, but just makes the hair feel smoother and also reduce frizz. So that makes for the third full-sized product in this month’s box, and another one that I will truly use, so even more bonus points from me!

Goldwell dualsenses Rich Repair Cream Shampoo & Conditioner – Sachet samples, 10ml each (RRP: $24.95/300ml each)

This shampoo is for dry and damaged hair while the conditioner is an anti-breakage conditioner – just what my hair needs – and as I’ve never tried any for the products from Goldwell I am quite excited about trying these and seeing how they make my hair feel and look.

All in all I have to say that Violet Box has really really done it again. I have been impressed with the quality of the samples in the previous two box, and I have to say that Violet Box has out-performed itself this month with not just three full sized products, but three full sized products that I will actually use and which have a combined value of $65.00 – almost three times the cost of the box! Well done Violet Box, I am super impressed – and already looking forward to next month!!

*Product was kindly provided for consideration, and has reviewed in accordance with my Disclosure Policy.

What do you think of the contents of the August Violet Box? Did you get this months’ box too? What did you think? Have you tried any of these products?

Product Review: Hydra-Oil Replenishing Body Cream

While I don’t have particularly dry skin, there is no denying that  does get a little drier during winter, and consequently I am always on the lookout for a very moisturising body cream, so here’s my thoughts on the *Hydra-Oil Replenishing Body Cream;

What They Say:
"Specially formulated to help diminish the appearance of scars and other skin discolourations such as spots and stretchmarks".

RRP: $21.95 (150ml) - Available exclusively from Coles

What I Say:
I also recently reviewed the Hydra-Oil, so if you’ve missed my review, you can see it here.

The Hydra-Oil has been designed with an ingredient called Tri Nano Oil which acts as a non-greasy emollient and helps with increased skin absorption.

It claims to be specifically formulated to help diminish the appearance of scars and other skin discolorations such as spots and stretch marks, as well as aiding in evening out skin tone and nourishing mature and dehydrated skin.

It is made up of essential oils, which helps to tone the skin and remove the dryness to keep the skin smooth and hydrated. Hydra-Oil is rich in vitamins which help fight signs of ageing and improves the health and quality of skin.

Unlike other body creams, this cream comes in an aerosol can, where the cream sprays out like a little like a shaving gel. The can is easy to use – well the first time, but when you go back to get more and you have slightly greasy hands from the cream, it does make it a little trickier to hang on to the bottle.

The actual cream is very light and airy, it is also very creamy, and as claimed, it really does absorb quickly into the skin without leaving it greasy. And it instantly leave the skin feel extremely soft, smooth and very hydrated. My winter dry shins are no longer dry, and neither are the drier area such as elbows and knees.

It has a quite strong natural scent, no doubt coming from the rosemary, lavender and chamomile oils used. This scent does fade once the cream has absorbed into the skin, but still does linger around a little.

So how did the cream perform after using it for a few weeks? Well, I have to say that I have not noticed any difference in the appearance of stretch marks, scars or skin tone. But Hydra-Oil is recommending using to twice a day for a minimum of three months to see results, and as I’ve only been using it once a day for a few weeks it may be a little early to cast a verdict.

What I like:
  • That it contains lots of natural oils including chamomile, lavender, rosemary, sunflower, and calendula,
  • It is very moisturising
  • It absorbs quickly and is non-greasy

What I don’t like
  • That I cannot see how much cream is left in the can
  • That the can is a little tricky to use when you have greasy hands
  • The scent is a little strong
  • That it contains parabens

Overall, this is a lovely body cream, which is extremely moisturising and nourishing, yet absorbs quickly and without leaving the skin feel greasy. At $21.95 for 150ml it is a little expensive for a ‘supermarket’, but as it is quite concentrated I’d dare say that the can would last for a while, although again, this is hard to tell, as it is not possible to see how much cream is left in the can – after two weeks of daily use, it feels like I still have around half a can left. So if you have dry skin, I definitely recommend that you give this body cream a go.
*This product was kindly provided for consideration, and has been reviewed in accordance with my Disclosure Policy.

Have you tried any of the products from Hydra-Oil? What do you think of a body lotion in a can? What’s your favourite body lotion?
