Product Review: Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Eventone Perfecting Cream

Throughout my childhood and as a teenager I was outside in the sun all day long during summer. Growing up in Scandinavia where the summers are short and you can never trust the weather to be nice, you simply make the most of it when the sun is finally out. Sadly it now means that I have far more sun damage than I’d care to admit, so I am constantly looking for products that can help minimise its appearance. Here are my thoughts on the Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Eventone Perfecting Cream;

What They Say:
Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Eventone Tone Perfecting Cream has been designed to give a brighter, more even-toned complexion while reducing the appearance of unwanted discolouration, age spots, dark spots, freckles caused by the sun, ageing skin, and scarring.

RRP: $12.99 (75g) – Available from Priceline, supermarkets and select pharmacies

What I Say:
I have combination skin prone to breakouts, especially when using too heavy or concentrated products, and at the age of 40, I have increasing pigmentation as well as some acne scars.

Normally I use a serum and a day cream, and at night a serum followed by a night cream, so I started replacing my usual day cream/night cream with the Eventone cream.

The Eventone cream has the most gorgeous scent – very perfumed, but this also worried me a little as I’m not used to using so perfumed moisturisers in my face. The second thing I noticed was how thick the cream was. It is very concentrated and only a little is needed. It is a little difficult to spread on the skin and it does leave the skin feeling a little greasy for a while, but it did leave my skin feeling very moisturised, and soft.

Because of the greasy, I found that it was simply too thick for me to apply makeup over, and my makeup would not last as long as it normally does, but start to slide off my face already at lunch time. So consequently I started only using it as a night cream as well as on my decollate where I also have quite a bit of pigmentation. Sadly after just a few nights of using it, I felt that my skin was starting to break out, with more breakouts than I had seen for a while, and consequently I immediately stopped using it on my face, but continued to use it on the pigmentation on my decollate.

After using the full jar of cream, the skin on my decollate is slowly getting a more even appearance and sunspots/age spots are slowly getting a bit lighter in colour, and my skin also feels very soft and thoroughly moisturised.

The cream comes in a large 75ml glass jar with a peach coloured lid. I must admit that I always prefer moisturisers in tubes, as I find it a little unhygienic constantly dipping your fingers into the pot. At just $12.99, and being so concentrated, I think it is great value.

As mentioned above the cream has an absolutely gorgeous floral scent which I absolutely love – and I can’t stop smelling my fingers after I have applied it – but sadly it is just a little too perfumed for me to use as a face cream, although I do not have sensitive skin. I could also imagine this being too perfumed for sensitive skin types.

What I Like:
  • Gorgeous scent
  • Well priced
  • Very concentrated
  • Thoroughly moisturising
  • Makes my skin appear more even toned
  • Readily available in supermarkets too

What I Don’t Like:
  • Too greasy for my combination skin
  • That it comes in a glass jar, as I prefer creams that come in tubes
  • Too perfumed for me to use in the face

While I loved what this cream has done to the skin on my decollate, I am not sure if I will be repurchasing – if only the cream was available in a lighter unscented version! However, regardless, this Eventone Tone Perfecting Cream is well worth a try if you love strong scents, and maybe if you have dry skin on your face used to a thicker and heavier cream. At just $13 you can’t go wrong in the fight for a more even toned skin.

Do you have sun damage? Which products do you use to try minimise the damage? Have you ever tried any of the products from Palmer’s?

Product Review: Premium Spa Body Wash with Tangerine & Lime Zest

I’ve always taken forever to wake up in the mornings, and used to require several cups (read mugs!) of strong coffee to get the body into motion. Fast forward, and now with a baby, and no longer getting my required sleep every night, and having to cut down my caffeine intake dramatically so I don’t pass on too much to my baby boy through the breast milk, I rely on other measures to wake me up, such as a refreshing shower, and here are my thoughts on one of the shower products that I’ve enjoyed using lately; the Premium Spa Body Wash with Tangerine & Lime Zest;

 What They Say:
"Indulge in the invigorating aromas of tangerine, lime & lemon oils combined with organic aloe for a gentle-to-the-skin formulation that leaves skin softly cleansed and revitalised."

RRP: $9.95/300ml – Available from Priceline, Big W and selected pharmacies

What I Say:
I have only just come across the newly launched Premium Spa brand (check out my review of the SOS Foot products here, and the SOS Hand Cream here), and have been very impressed with the quality of these budget products.

Premium Spa has been around for over 8 years, but has recently been relaunched with new packaging and some new products as well. Common for all the products in the range is that they are made in Australia from natural, locally grown ingredients, and contain no chemical nasties such as: SLS, mineral oils, detergents, artificial colours, synthetic fillers, or polybeads, which always gets the big thumbs up from me.  In addition, the packaging is also recyclable, and none of the products have been tested on animals!

The Premium Spa Body Wash with Tangerine & Lime Zest come in a simple slightly frosted white tall bottle with a push lid, making it simple and easy to use in the shower, even when you have wet hands.

The Body Wash contains, as the name suggests tangerine and lemon oil and lime zest, which combined help to uplift and refresh the senses, and helps balance and maintain the oil and moisture balance in the skin. It has also been formulated with certified organic aloe vera to help soothe and heal the skin and calendula extracts to help calm the skin.

The body wash easily lathers up to a soft foam, although you get even more form if you use a loofah in the shower. The body wash leaves the skin soft and clean without drying it out. And as you use the body wash, the most refreshing and zesty citrus scent that lingers both in the bathroom, and on my skin for a while after I am out of the shower – definitely awakens my senses, although I may still be half asleep myself! Absolutely divine – and if you are a regular reader of my blog, you will know that citrus scents are one of my favourites, so this is nothing short of perfect!

Unfortunately (for me!), my darling husband has also realised how divine this body wash smells, and that it is not a girly scent, so sadly it appears that I cannot even keep it to myself! Bummer!

In spite of not drying out my skin, I still follow with a body lotion, although this does somewhat reduce the gorgeous citrus scent.

What I Like:
  • Has the most divine refreshing citrus scent
  • Leaves the skin feeling cleansed and soft and with a gorgeous zesty scent
  • Australian owned and made products
  • Contains natural ingredients and no harsh or nasty chemicals
  • Not tested on animals
  • Simple and easy to use bottle, which is recyclable
  • Great budget price

What I Don’t Like:
  • I absolutely love everything about this body wash as this is just my favourite scent, - my only wish could be that a larger sized bottle it a pump would be available, and that a matching body lotion and body scrubs would one day become available as well.

Yet again, Premium Spa has impressed me. This is such a gorgeous scented body wash, and while $9.95 may be slightly more expensive than other body washes available from the supermarket, this one not loaded with harsh chemicals, and consequently I feel that it is worthwhile paying just a few more dollars. I will definitely be repurchasing this again – and seeing my lovely husband has also taken a liking to it, it is likely to be on the shopping list sooner rather than later. If you too are loving zesty citrus scented products, then I highly recommend you try it!

Product Review: Maybelline New York Color Whispers

I am a little late with posting about these, but life with a small baby keeps me a little busy… Anyway, here are my thoughts on the *Maybeline New York Color Whispers;

What They Say:
Maybelline New York Color Whisper is a sheer and subtle lip colour that leaves lips shiny, featuring flexible gel and silicone oils. The pure colour pigments are dispersed through the gel formula that offers translucent colour. The lipstick is packaged in a slim case and comes in eight different shades.

RRP: $14.95 – Available from Priceline, selected pharmacies, department stores, variety stores and supermarkets

What I Say:

The Maybelline New York Color Whispers come in a selection of 8 different shades;

L-R: 25, 55, 65, 45, 40, 60, 90, 95

25 - Lust for Blush (Dusty Rose)

55 - One Size Fits Pearl (Sheer Pearlescent)

65 - Pink Possibilities (Bright Pink)

45 - Who Wore It Red-Er (Red)

40 - Orange Attitude (orange)

60 - Petal Rebel (Medium Pink)

90 - Oh La Lilac (Lilac)

95 - Mad for Magenta (Magenta/Fuchsia)

They Color Whispers have a gentle scent, which reminds me a little of vanilla, and they come in a modern case with a transparent lid, which has the colour of the actual lipstick, and this makes it so easy to find the shade you are looking for – especially if you’re lucky and like me have a selection of the colours. I personally like most of the colours, but my favourite is Who Wore It Red-Er.

The actual lipstick are more like lip butters than lipsticks, although they do have more pigmentation. On the lips they feel like lipbalm, so soft, smooth and very moisturising. It has a fairly good wear of a few hours – although more for the darker colours, which naturally have a better pigmentation – and even when it has worn off, my lips feel soft and moisturised.

With a baby and not much time to apply my makeup, lately I’ve been wearing more casual makeup, and also a lot more lipglosses than lipsticks – but these Colour Whispers will be perfect for a daytime casual look.

 What I Like:
  • The nice selection of colours – there should be one for everyone!
  • The price
  • Easy to apply
  • They feel so lovely to wear

What I Don’t Like:
  • I really cannot think of any negatives about these Color Whispers

Overall, I really like these Color Whispers, they feel so comfortable to wear and compared to a lipgloss, they give your lips little more colour, yet is not as heavy as a normal lipstick.

Industry News: Clinique Launches NEW Repairwear Laser Focus

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you’d know that I love Clinique, so I always get excited when I see new products being launched, and now Clinique is launching the New NEW Repairwear Laser Focus.

The original formula of the Repairwear Laser Focus was developed to address lines and wrinkles, promising to deliver 63% of the visible wrinkle reducing power of a dermatological laser in just 12 weeks.

And now Clinique has added even more innovative technology to its powerhouse serum with the new Repairwear Laser Focus Smooths, Restores, Corrects – a newly reformulated serum that delves one step beyond lines and wrinkles to deliver twice the smoothing results as before. "In talking with our Guiding Dermatologists, we learned that patients with lines and wrinkles also had poor skin texture. This prompted us to re-evaluate the original formula to see how we could improve the serum to address poor surface texture," says Dr. Tom Mammone, Executive Director of Skin Physiology and Pharmacology, Clinique Research & Development, Worldwide.

New ingredients for remarkably smooth skin texture
As the skin ages, cell turnover slows and dead cells accumulate on the top layer of skin, making lines and wrinkles more noticeable. When the cell renewal process is normalized and encouraged, skin appears smooth and more refined. RepairwearLaser Focus Smooths, Restores, Corrects contains new skin resurfacing technology that encourages gentle yet effective exfoliation to reveal smoother, more radiant looking skin.

  • Acetyl Glucosamine: this multi-functional amino-sugar and building block of hyaluronic acid aids in naturally breaking the bonds that hold dead skin cells on the surface of the skin for a more natural shedding process.

  • Salvia Sclarea (Clary) Extract: derived from the Salvia Sclarea plant, supports the final steps of cell differentiation and exfoliation by promoting the reformation of the skin’s barrier layer.

Restores skin’s youthful appearance

Deterioration of skin from both the natural aging process as well as harmful UV rays results in fine lines and wrinkles. As skinbecomes damaged over time, natural collagen synthesis is reduced, resulting in the overall loss of skin’s structural integrity.Repairwear Laser Focus Smooths, Restores, Corrects contains a high-level peptide complex that boosts natural collagen production and helps maintain existing natural collagen with essential ingredients. Skin becomes more firm and the appearance of lines and wrinkles is diminished.

  • Whey Protein: a natural, high-quality polypeptide rich in amino acids helps skin look and feel more firm and resilient while minimizing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
  • Acetyl Hexapeptide-8: this bio-peptide helps stimulate natural collagen production and encourages repair.

Visibly corrects UV damage

Additionally, a potent blend of repair enzymes encapsulated in a liposome delivery system works to correct the appearance of existing UV damage and protects the skin from further breakdown by helping to fight free radicals from environmental aggressors.

  • Micrococcus Luteus (Ultrasomes V): these liposomes work to support skin’s ability to visibly repair damage from UV exposure.
  • Plankton Extract (Photosomes V): absorbs visible light to promote natural cellular repair, helping to improve the appearance of sun-damaged skin over time.
  • Vitamins C and E (Aminopropyl Ascorbyl Phosphate and Tocopheryl Acetate): provides antioxidant protection from free radicals induced by UV exposure.
  • Arabidopsis Thaliana Extract (Roxisomes): repairs by targeting free radical damage.

A second chance for every skin.

Dermatologist tested and oil-free, NEW Repairwear Laser Focus Smooths, Restores, Corrects is uniquely formulated to work day and night to reveal a dramatic smoothness of skin’s texture with significant improvements in radiance and luminosity. With continued use, troublesome lines and wrinkles are visibly reduced. As a result, skin is left smoother and a youthful appearance is restored.

Repairwear Laser Focus Smooths, Restores, Corrects is suitable for all skin types and ages. It has an RRP of $72 (30ml), $108 (50ml) and $180 (100ml in Limited Edition Bottle). It is available from 2nd March 2014 from in Myer, David Jones , selected pharmacies, Clinique.com.au and Mecca Maxima.

Product Review: Ultraceuticals Ultra Body Moisturiser

Today I’d like to share with you one of my newest discoveries, the *Ultraceuticals Ultra Body Moisturiser;

What They Say:
"This body moisturiser helps to balance and maintain the skin's optimum moisture levels. Developed with a powerful blend of biomimetic moisturising agents (Ceramide-3, Sodium PCA, Urea and Sodium Hyaluronate) to support the skin's own Natural Moisturising Factor (NMF) combined with Shea Butter and Glycerin to provide long-lasting hydration. Delicately fragranced with uplifting natural botanical oils, this fast-acting, non-greasy formula will leave skin feeling velvety soft, perfectly nourished and smooth."

RRP: $49.00 (200ml) – Available from Ultraceuticals, David Jones and select stockists

What I Say:
My skin on my body is not particularly dry during summer – actually, when the temperatures heat up, my skin seems to be getting greasier. Yet I never omit using a body moisturiser when I’ve had a shower, as if I do, I feel my skin becoming itchy. But sadly, many of the creams and lotions that I use on my body throughout the year, which are perfectly fine and not too heavy or greasy, suddenly become way too concentrated for my skin with the mercury strikes.

Enter the Ultraceuticals Ultra Body Moisturiser. Ultraceuticals is an Australian cosmeceutical brand founded by a cosmetic physician in 1998, with the goal of having scientifically proven products addressing ageing, pigmentation and acne. The products have been developed to include superior and highly effective ingredients to create the most efficient products possible without needing a prescription.

The moisturiser has been cleverly developed to support the skin’s natural moisturising, and it also contains shea butter and glycerine to help keep the skin moisturised. It absorbs into the skin instantly, leaving it feel so deeply moisturised, yet without making it feel greasy or tacky. My skin is simply silky soft and smooth.

The Body Moisturiser comes in a tube with a flip lid, making it easy to use, and being designed to stand on its lid, it is easy to use up every last drop of moisturiser as well.
It has a lovely and gentle floral scent, which however more or less fades as soon as the cream has absorbed into the skin.

After having used the Body Moisturiser daily for several weeks, my skin not only feels, it also looks healthier. Gone are the dry shins (the only part of my body that is usually dry), and even my decollate, which is starting to show the signs of ageing, looks so much nicer, with fine lines and wrinkles appearing to be plumped out.

What I Like:
  • Absorbs instantly into the skin
  • Non-greasy
  • Has a lovely gentle floral scent
  • Products are Australian owned and made

What I Don’t Like:
  • A little pricey

Overall this is such a nice Body Moisturiser, and I love how it makes my skin feel and look. There is no denying that it is a little more expensive than then body moisturisers that I usually use, but I can certainly also tell the difference, so I wish my budget would allow for me to use this all the time. If you afford it, it is well worth the splurge!

Product Review: ELES Mineral Cosmetics Age Defying BB Cream 30

When I was working my way up the corporate ladder in the corporate world I would always wear a fairly well covering foundation. But then I stopped working and became a stay-at-home mum, and since then, I have (naturally?) started wearing a more casual makeup look, including replacing my previous foundations with tinted moisturisers and BB creams. Here are my thoughts on the *ELES Mineral Cosmetics Age Defying BB Cream 30;

What They Say:
Multi-faceted and benefit-packed, this new, innovative treatment cream primes, tints, nourishes, evens out skin tone, and helps to strengthen and protect skin on contact.  Upon application, skin immediately appears more uniform, hydrated and luminous, while being protected from UVA/UVB damage with Broad Spectrum SPF 30.  Over time, age defying peptides and natural extracts help to promote cell health, strengthen elasticity and restore skin’s youthful glow. Skin caring and skin perfecting in one simple step. Available in 3 shades: Light, Medium and Deep.

RRP: $45.00 (33ml) – Available from ELES and select stockists

What I Say:
The ELES Mineral Cosmetics Age Defying BB Cream 30, has a broad spectrum SPF 30 helps to defend skin against UVA/UVB sun damage, which to me is an absolute must under the harsh Australian sun.

The BB cream contains among others Matrix Rebuilding Complex, which is a combination of Palmitoyl Hexapeptde-14 and Goji Berry Extract in an invisible patch delivery system, helping to improve skin’s elasticity while softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

It also contains Multi-Mineral Complex (Magnesium, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Lysine) to help protect and reenergize skin, Squalane for super hydration increasing skin smoothness and softness, as well as Vitamin E to protect against free radical damage. And in addition the cream is free from parabens, which is always a bonus.

The BB cream can be worn alone or used as a protective makeup primer before foundation, also giving you extra coverage. The BB cream has a sheer coverage, yet it still manages to even out minor pigmentation, redness and reducing the look of acne scarring, leaving the skin looking natural and with a nice sheen and healthy glow, yet without being too shimmery – and having combination skin that gets even more greasy during summer, I like that, as too shimmery products tend make my skin look even greasier.

I tried the medium shade, which is a perfect match for my medium neutral skin tone, especially now that I have a little bit of a summer tan, but come winter and my skin gets a little more pale, the medium shade is likely to be too dark for my skin. The BB Cream is absolutely perfect for a casual and barely there look, although I still need to use a concealer to cover up the dark circles under my eyes, darker pigmentation and scarring. And on the days I feel I need or want to wear more makeup, I follow with a more covering foundation and a powder on top.

The BB cream is very hydrating, and with my combination skin I do not need to use a moisturiser underneath, in fact, on the very hot days, if I do use a moisturiser first, I feel it quickly slides off my face. But of course, if you do have dry skin, you’ll probably want to use a moisturiser underneath.

The BB cream lasts well, even on my combination skin, it stays put for several hours without fading, settling into fine lines or getting too shiny, although, being so hot and humid at the moment, I do find that I need to use a powder half way through the day to take the shine off. But seeing it is summer, warm and humid, I would pretty much have to regardless of the product I use.

The Medium Shade is a perfect
match to my summer skin tone

The BB Cream blended into my hand!

I love that this BB cream is so multi-tasking both priming, tinting, nourishing and evening out the skin at the same time, and not to mention also has age defying properties aimed at hydrating and strengthening the skin strength by improving elasticity and reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles – although I have to admit that I have not noticed any major improvement in the condition of the skin – but still, it certainly doesn’t hurt that these anti-ageing.

The BB cream is quite thick, yet it spreads quickly and easily, being very concentrated so you only need a little. It comes in a stylish white tube with a black screw lid, making it easy to use, and dispense just the amount of cream you need. It has a slight chemical scent, but luckily this quickly fades once the cream has absorbed into the skin.

What I Like:
  • That it is free from parabens
  • It contains anti-ageing ingredients caring for my skin while covering imperfections
  • Leaves my skin looking naturally even with a nice sheen and healthy glow
  • Comes in a stylish tube

What I Don’t Like:
  • Could have a slightly better coverage
  • A little pricey
  • Only available in three shades, so you may struggle finding your perfect shade

Overall, I thoroughly enjoy using this BB Cream from ELES, as it evens out my skin tone while giving it a healthy and fresh-faced glow, while not making my combination skin look greasy or slide off my face. Well done ELES!

Product Review: Covergirl Flamed Out Mascara

As you probably all know, Pink is the face of Covergirl, and I absolutely love Pink. Last time she  was touring, in spite of doing a record number – 17 concerts in total, I was for some reason not able to go. And when she toured Australia again in 2013 I so wanted to go, and with a total of 18 concerts held in Melbourne, I’d think that I should be able to find a day that suited – but nope, I was highly pregnant at the time, so I didn’t really feel like jumping around, or being bumped for that matter. And my husband felt so sorry for me that he gave me the DVD with the concert which happened to be filmed in Melbourne, and I love it, and have watched it countless times already while I wait for her to come back to Melbourne.

And doesn’t Pink just look so stunning in the Flamed Out ads!

Anyway, back to it, here are my thoughts on the newly launched *CoverGirl Flamed Out Mascara;

What They Say:

"An innovative Volume Igniter brush defines and separates each lash, saturating with mascara as it flares them up and out for a wide-eyed look. The high density of soft, hollow fibre bristles on the ends of the brush soak up mascara and deposit it onto the lashes, while shorter bristles in the centre of the brush ensure all over coverage. The thick, fast setting formula is smudge proof and flake resistant, ensuring maximum volume that doesn’t smear during application or after. Available in Very Black Blaze (300) and Black/Brown Blaze (315)."

RRP: $14.95 (11ml) – Available from Available from Priceline, Supermarkets, Variety Stores and Selected Pharmacies

What I Say:

The new Flamed Out collection from CoverGirl is all about creating a long-lasting exotic, high-impact eyes that are sure to turn heads.

Covergirl P!NK says "I like my makeup to be colourful, smoky, sexy and the new Flamed Out Collection from CoverGirl is all those things. The Mascara gives you big, flamed out lashes and the Shadow Pencils complement each other to make a dramatic statement - perfect for the kind of looks I like to wear on stage! Hot enough for you?"
(Stay tuned for my review of the Shadow Pencils shortly!)

So the mascara claims to be a Volume Igniter that flares up the lashes. It has a quite large hourglass shaped wand to ensure that every single lash, even the shortest of lashes is coated with the mascara. The end of the brush is small and helps get to the smaller lashes near the inner corner of the eye, while the middle part of the mascara makes it easy to coat the longer lashes.

As all new mascaras it is very full, and with the first few uses you have to be careful not to get too much on the wand, as then you will end up with mascara all over your lids too, and not to mention your lashes will stick together as they drown in mascara overload. I usually get around this by scraping some of the mascara off on the top of the tube, so all that mascara is not wasted. But why is it that all mascaras, regardless of whether they are cheap or expensive, are always best near the end when it is just about empty!

Just one coat of the mascara is enough for a nice look with long lashes and volume, but adding another coat does give you a more dramatic look – and if you like, you can add a third coat on the edges of the lashes for an extreme look.

And true to its claim, this Flamed Out mascara does make my lashes not only thicker and longer, but it also gives them a bit of a curl. Once upon time, before having a baby I was a lot better at remembering to use an eyelash curler, but these days, I simply don’t have the time, so I like that the mascara does this as well, helping to open up my eyes and make them look less tired than they really are. And the mascara also nicely separates the lashes, without clumping. And very important, it doesn’t irritate or drop particles into my eyes, and although my eyes water easily, it doesn’t smudge either. It simply stays put all day. And when it comes time to remove it, it easily removes with an eye makeup remover without the need to pull or drag in the sensitive eye area.

The actual mascara comes in nice red and purple packaging, and it is not just the brush that is super-sized, the actual tube is too. I don’t really mind that, - firstly because it is due to the mascara being so big and containing a whopping 11ml of mascara, but secondly because I rarely take my mascara with me on the go, so I don’t have to worry about it taking up too much room in my already overfilled handbag!

What I Like:
  • The wand is easy to use, making it easy to also coat the small lashes
  • True to its claim it gives my lashes both length and volume, and curls them at the same time
  • Suitable for sensitive eyes
  • Great value for money

 What I Don’t Like:
  • There is a lot of mascara in the tube so it may clump at the first few uses – but on the other hand, rather a full mascara than one that is half-empty!

Overall this is a great mascara that lives up to its claims. It is suitable for both everyday wear with just one coat giving the lashes a nice natural look, while 2-3 coats will give you a more dramatic look suitable for a night out. At just $14.95 this mascara is an amazing bargain buy – now all we can dream off is to look as gorgeous as Pink!
